Should you have Multiple Domains or Websites to Promote your Business?

I get this question a lot from prospects or clients who have heard that having multiple domains pointing to their website or multiple websites or landing pages for each of their services can increase their hits and rank their page(s) higher on search engines. Some clients have come to me in the past with several keyword based domain names, pointing to the same website or several websites that are similar versions of the same content.  They think or have been told by unscrupulous SEO ‘experts’ this will give them an advantage on the playing field, on in this instance, on the SERP (search engine results page).

What’s in a Name? Domain Name Extensions Explained

There are 116 Million registered domains with the “.com” extension as of 2015. So with that said, the domain registrars saw the need to add new Top Level Domains in 2014, such as .tv, .social, .co, .us, .info, .photography, .marketing, .company, and so on and so forth. But are these new domain extensions as effective when promoting your website?  Does your domain name affect your SEO or page ranking on the search engines?  What is the public’s perception of some of these new TLD’s?

Can I use Facebook as my Company Website?

You can easily replace this question with any social media platform:  Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and/or LInked In.  Either way, the simple answer is ‘no’.  Why not? There are several reasons why companies (mostly new, startup companies) ask this question or use this as a reason why they don’t need a website.  First and foremost, starting a social media profile/page is free and you don’t need any professional design or development skills to at least set it up.  Second, you have a large audience base all ready at your fingertips – As of January 2014, 74% of online adults use social networking sites, with 71% of that audience on Facebook. (PEW Research Poll).  Third, you can post to it regularly and update your account as you need.

Have you ever had a conversation with someone who dominated the conversation?  They talk over you, they only talk about themselves and their accomplishments, or when you talk they aren’t listening because their formulating what they’re about to say next.  You know someone like this, we all do.  And why is it so bothersome?  Not only is it rude but it shows a total lack of concern or interest in the other person in the conversation – you. People who engage in one-way conversations usually do not have many wanting to strike up a conversation with them.
